Ian Harley - Gone Home

I’m sorry to have to tell you that Ian Harley, who had been the President of West London Scout District since t was formed in 2004, died last week.

Ian had been associated with Scouting in the District for many years – he succeeded Lord Hailsham as President of the former Marylebone Scout District and continued as President when Marylebone merged with the old Paddington District to form Paddington and St. Marylebone.

A former Westminster Councillor, Ian served both as Deputy Lord Mayor and subsequently in 1981 as Lord Mayor of Westminster.  Ian’s service as President of the three Districts was outstanding, indeed the only time he missed attending the annual St. George’s Day Parade, AGM, and wreath-laying ceremony on Remembrance Sunday was in 1981 when we were obliged to give him “special leave” while he served as Lord Mayor.  More than that he was extremely interested in Scouting and in various ways gave great support to five District Commissioners over the years.

Ian’s funeral will take place at 12.30 p.m. on Wednesday 22 February at St. Mark’s Church, Hamilton Terrace.
